South Coast Family Theatre: A new resource for finding a show made for young folk

There’s so much great theatre work made for young folk happening in Dorset and surrounding areas, but it can be hard to find the right show, with the right age range, running time, and ticket price. South Coast Family Theatre launched in February 2024 - it is a free resource which does three things:

  • Lists shows made for families in date order

Which highlights key information such as recommended age range, running time, location, price and details such as a BSL/ Captioned shows.

  • Lists venue access info.

Each venue has been directly asked questions such as:

    Where is the baby change?

    Is there step free access?

    Is there a feeding space?

    Is there a buggy park?

So that visitors can know-before-they-go and plan out their trip a little more. (These kind of details can be a real source of anxiety on a first trip into a new space)

Creator Lizzy Maries says: “I’m on a mission to help as many people as possible find a great show for their young folk, and give them the confidence to go. I’ve created the site so no-one can advertise on it - I want everyone to find shows in date order so they find the right fit for them - not just the shows with the biggest marketing budgets.

The first time I took my baby to the theatre, I was terrified of how it might go - and I worked at that theatre! So I hope my top five tips are useful to people as both an industry insider and a parent.”

Lizzy welcomes conversations with organisations and venues in Dorset about the project - and can be contacted on hello@southcoastfamilytheatre.co.uk
